Letter from Catherine Smith, Convict Penitentiary, Cork, to Dr Fitzgerald, magistrate, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], seeking to be liberated and not face [transportation] and offering to provide information which would lead to the recovery of watches and silver belonging to Thomas Taylor, Mr Nagles and Mr Croker; adding that she can be contacted through Francis D Murphy, Governor. Also testimony of Smith, accusing Patrick Kennedy, Michael Ryan, Michael Crook and others in Tipperary with the theft of a gun from Lord Caher; includes covering letter from Murphy, to Fitzgerald. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letters from John Henderson, Sub Inspector, Navan, to Col John Harvey, Inspector General, stating that Christopher Flynn appears to have been killed at Moynalty, County Meath by Rev William Kellett, magistrate, who was deranged at the time. Also letters from Harvey, Portarlington, [Queens County or County Laois], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, complaining that Capt Browne, Chief Constable, has yet to submit a report on the death and seeking an explanation on this apparent neglect of duty. Also letter from Henry P Browne, Kells, [probably to Henderson, explaining the delay and noting that there had been little expectation of Flynn’s death who had been struck by a sword and observing that Kellett absconded when faced with arrest. Also copy of the proceedings of the inquest into Flynn’s death, including evidence of John Maguire and John Carter, constables, Margaret Jenkins, Margaret Mathew, Luke Clarke and Dr Mathew Walshe.

Letter from Richard Falkiner, magistrate, Mount Falcon, [County Tipperary], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, reporting on large processions which took place through Cloughjordan and Borrisokane, comprised of thousands of men dress in military order wearing green and accompanied by music; noting that the processions are organised by suspicious characters and were not supported by a catholic priest; adding that he used his influence to bring catholic and protestant clergymen together to sign a memorial in favour of catholic relief; enclosing a copy of an intimidatory letter he received signed by Daniel O’Reily, Order of Liberators, Borrisokane. Also printed handbill entitled ‘Resolution of the Catholic Association to discountenance public meetings’, moved by Mr Sheil and Mr Murphy, advising the people of Tipperary to discontinue these assemblies.

Includes letters from Gerald Fitzgerald, magistrate, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, warning that the fire arms of the military are vulnerable to theft and recommending that he be allowed to search for arms; enclosing affidavits concerning processions and sedition. Also printed order authorizing Fitzgerald to search for arms in the baronies of Iffa and Offa East and West. Also affidavits of Edward Hewit, sub constable, Ardfinan, providing an eyewitness account of the procession at Clogheen which was marshalled by a man named Phelan; of Thomas Judge, sub constable, concerning the procession in Clonmel; of Henry Fisher, Clonmel, reporting on seditious utterances of Maher, shoemaker. Letters from Richard Falkiner, magistrate, Mount Falcon, Borrisokane, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, concerning his investigation of those responsible for posting notices in Borrisokane and Nenagh, identifying members of the Brunswick Club and those who refused to sign a petition of the Catholic Association; enclosing one of the printed handbills announcing a meeting of the ‘Friends of Civil and Religious Liberty’ to form a Liberal Club at Nenagh Chapel and listing the names of 18 supporters including the parish priest; mentioning William Gleeson of Nenagh and BP Lambert, Chief Constable. Also affidavit of Falkiner, reporting on a confrontation between a mob headed by Patrick Gleeson and the police who were engaged in pulling down printed notices.
