Memorial of Mary Bell, Ennis, [County Clare] to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, claiming that her brother, Capt John McNamara who is in a delicate mental state, has been deprived of his freedom and has had his military pension unjustly taken over by his ‘cruel’ brother, Lieut Michael McNamara. Also accusing local justices of the peace of delinquency in the matter and noting that she is the wife of Lieut Bell of the New South Wales Veteran Company. Also related letters from Bell, to Wellesley and Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary. Also letter from Westropp P Watkins, Chief Constable of Police, Ennis, to Maj G Warburton, Inspector General of Police, claiming that the signing over of the pension was witnessed by three respectable witnesses; that Capt John is not insane but has been suffering with paralysis for a number of years and that a ‘family feud’ is behind the affair as Bell fears that she would not get her dividend in the event of her brother’s death. |
