File of letters concerning a disagreement between Thomas Williams, Chief Constable, Woodford, [County Galway] and John Burke, magistrate of Tin Trim and Arthur Nugent, landlord, arising from a scheme to arrest individuals for obstruction and non-payment of rent. Includes letters from Williams, to Maj George Warburton, objecting to a proposal hatched by Nugent and Burke for a large police operation supported by a force of nearly 100 men to arrest individuals; claiming that such a plan would place the police in an awkward position between two factions and that ‘if Mr Burke is allowed to proceed … it would be enough to drive the people to an insurrection’. Also letter from Burke, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, outlining how he arrested Michael Monghan of Tulla for obstructing Nugent from carrying away a distress of corn in lieu of rent; explaining his motivations in detail. Also covering letter from Warburton, Castlegar, to Goulburn and draft memorandum probably from Goulburn. |
