Letters from magistrate Dr [Gerald] Fitzgerald, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding copies of affidavits sworn before him by subconstables Michael Burke and Thomas Doherty, against subconstable Edward Hewit, who wounded Burke with a bayonet during a drunken affray. Annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene and Henry Joy, Attorney General. Observes ‘Hewit is a Protestant and Burke a Catholic, and it was supposed that their dispute was a religious one’, but states that as Burke has refused to prosecute the case, he has been committed to gaol and will be dismissed from the police force.
