SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Private letter from Dr [Gerald] Fitzgerald, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, informing him that Thomas Ryan, a crown witness under the care of [chief constable Michael] Farrell of the Head Office of Police, offered to travel to County Tipperary to obtain information relating to the murder of Rev Going. Outlines that Ryan met with a man named Keating of Ballycahil, who admitted to carrying out several robberies, and asked him to help him in the theft of a double barrelled gun from a sportsman in Thurles. Requests permission to direct Ryan to comply with Keating’s request, ‘in which case I can make such arrangements as will enable me to take the entire party in the fact’. Annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of John Doherty, Solicitor General. Additional note dated October 1861, referring to the murder of Rev Going in County Tipperary in 1829, as well as the murder of a magistrate named Going in either County Limerick or Tipperary ‘some years previous to 1829’. |

Letter from magistrate Dr [Gerald] Fitzgerald, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding letter he received from constable Richard Gannon, Fethard, relating to a number of attempted attacks made on a young girl named Margaret [Peggy] Horan, who ‘was a material Witness at last Assizes in prosecuting and convicting four brothers (the Wallaces) for murder’, stating that she has been transferred to the House of Industry at Clonmel for her own protection until further directions are received. Also refers to a number of additional outrages in the area, including: the malicious burning of the home of Michael Ryan of Kilpatrick, Dundrum; the murder of Mr Going; and the robbery of the home of Mr Green. |
