Letter from magistrate Dr [Gerald] Fitzgerald, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, informing him of another attempt on the life of schoolmaster James Ryan of Knocka, Templemore, when 2 men dressed in womens’ clothes fired on his labourers while digging potatoes. States he has directed chief constable [William] Doolan of Thurles to ‘give a Patrol of Police during the day time, upon the ground, so long as Ryan is digging and carrying away his Potatoes.’

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from magistrate Dr [Gerald] Fitzgerald, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting a number of recent outrages in the county, including a riot at the Borrisoleigh fair, stating ‘the lawless ferocity of the Peasantry of that district to be imagined it must be witnessed. They look upon the Police as a handful of individuals whom they can crush and overpower whoever they please; and I am of opinion that nothing but the appearance of a fixed military station in that neighbourhood, in aid of the Civil Power, will be sufficient to overawe the turbulent spirit that prevails’. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letters from magistrate Dr [Gerald] Fitzgerald, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, informing him that John Cormick died as a result of a beating at Lissaroon on the night of 24 November 1829. Also reports a number of recent outrages in the county, including a Whiteboy attack on the home of farmer Thomas Russel at Drum on 5 December 1829, as well as a riot at the Templemore fair on 7 December 1829. Acknowledges receipt of sum of £10 as compensation for Russel, but subsequently returns the money to the Chief Secretary's Office, stating ‘the attack made upon his house does not at all partake of a Whiteboy outrage, that it was committed in the daytime, was greatly exaggerated to me, and that in point of fact it was an affray partly provoked by himself’.
