Letter from Rev Pierce Goold, Finnoe Glebe House, Borrisokane, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, requesting firearms to protect his family, explaining ‘as from very contracted means with a very large Family to support I can not afford even for the sake of my Females to remove them into any of the neighbouring Towns for Protection. I therefore have determined to make the best Defence I am able with my three Sons very young lads’. Additional letter from Maj [Samson] Carter, Borrisokane, to Leveson Gower, outlining his report in relation to same, and stating that he is afraid of setting a precedent for similar cases. Also note annotated by William Gregory, Under Secretary, as well as Archdeacon Thomas Singleton [private secretary to Hugh Percy, Lord Lieutenant], who states ‘His Excellency cannot consent to the distribution of arms on the application of Individuals’. |
