Letter from Alderman Frederick Darley and John Graves, magistrates, Head Office of Police, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, acknowledging an application from the inhabitants of Ringsend in County Dublin for the establishment of a police station in their vicinity; he stresses the necessity of it being supported by local subscription given the area is ‘situated beyond the limits prescribed by law for the collection of the watch tax’. Returns memorial from the inhabitants of Ringsend to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking ‘a resident police to protect them from the midnight Incendiary’. Refers to the proliferation of illegal and iniquitous crimes in the area against property and persons, the potential for escape or concealment from justice, and the presence of ‘Porter Houses…Club Houses, [and] night Houses for drinking and Dancing’; also emphasises the concentration of population in the area and the presence of numerous trades and manufacturing concerns, all of which need police protection, signed by J Clarke and 19 other individuals. Letter from James Holt, late 16th light dragoons, 36 Bow Bridge, near the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, referring to an earlier application for a post of employment and advancing claim for appointment as messenger to the Royal Hibernian School in Phoenix Park, Dublin. Encloses certificate from [Captain Hector] McLean, Royal Hospital, confirming Holt as an ‘honest, Sober, obedient and faithful’ individual. Also letter from Holt to Richard Willcocks, inspector general of police [Munster], Palmerstown, Dublin, emphasising past service and seeking reinstatement as police constable. Recalls incident of attach on his residence in the district of Grange, County Tipperary, by a group of armed banditti who extracted by force his ‘Gun and Pistol’, but due to the exertions of his wife and police colleague, managed to escape in the midst of a gun battle; certified by John Fitzgerald and 8 other magistrates of County Tipperary.
