Having overcame this obstacle, he states,’ I have answered the commodore’s signal and am getting ready for sea, and will sail as soon as we fleet’. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from George Dunn, Keeper, Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, conveying that delay in sailing of convict ship resulted from fever sickness of Joseph Dempsey, a convict from Newgate prison. The sick prisoner informed Dunn that he was ‘removed out of Hospital and put on board’. Indicates that dealing with this case of fever prevented Captain Draper ‘from putting to Sea’. Annotation on back directs that sheriff at Newgate be contacted in order to ascertain why ‘a fever Patient’ was taken out of the prison hospital. |

Explains that the ships Elizabeth, Tyne and Earl St Vincent, are now departed leaving only the Martha, which awaits orders to sail. Encloses answer of the master of ship Martha, at Cove, who states ‘in consequence of being so much crowded it is utterly impossible to accommodate the 2 families you mention’. Instructions annotated on back: ‘Write to Sir John Stewart, answer also the letter from Mr Hobhouse on this subject’. |

Letter from Richard Creaghe, Castlepark, near Golden, County Tipperary, to William Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, indicating that convicts should be conveyed at once to Cork for transportation and asking that a special order be obtained from the Lord Lieutenant for transmission of two inmates of Clonmel gaol to Cork. The two convicts in question, he protests ‘were the two men convicted of attacking my Herdsman in June last’. Annotation on back instructs ‘that they will be removed with the other convicts to Cork so soon as there are vessels ready for their embarkation’. |

Letter with enclosures from Dr Edward Trevor, Cove, County Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, regarding a male convict who drowned while attempting escape from convict ship Earl St Vincent, in Cork harbour. Encloses results of investigation into incident of downing conducted under guidance of Rear Admiral Josias Rowley and carried out by Lieutenant Lewis, of the Royal Navy; it is reported that the convict ‘Keating’ upon being discovered in his hiding place under the ship’s head ‘called out my life is in your hands, and either by design or accident immediately let go his hold of the Bobstay and dropt into the Water and disappeared’. Also letter from Trevor to Alexander Mangin, reporting incident and remarking ‘I am anxious to know your sentiments with regard to the Books’. |
