SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of Reverend Richard Bagwell, Church of Ireland clergyman, Clogher, County Tyrone, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting a transfer from his present station to the Deanery of Derry. Refers to previous enquiry about the vacancy and answer that it was offered to Sir Harvey Dunn, whom subsequently declined to accept the deanery. To facilitate the exchange Bagwell is prepared to sacrifice the Deanery of Clogher and the Chartership of Cashel which he holds, in order to ‘remove to such a considerable Town as Derry for the better Education of my Family’. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File relating to petition of Alexander Barrett, 9 Ushers Quay, Dublin, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting consideration for government employment. Having worked previously as a commissarial storekeeper, he claims to have the confidence and support of Major General Mitchel, Major General Graham, General Sir William H Clinton, Lieutenant General Lord Forbes, Major General L’Estrange and Colonel Handfield. Draft reply from Robert Peel added to back of memorial states ‘it is not in my power to give you any assurances as to the Lord Lieutenant being enabled to provide you with any employment in the Public Service’, dated 25 May 1818. Also includes letter from Barrett, 28 Suffolk Street, Charing Cross, London, England, to Robert Peel enclosing a reference certificate from Lieutenant General Mitchel with annotation on back ‘This person told Mr [William] Gregory that that I told him (B[arrett]) that I was sure that if he said one word to Mr G[regory], Mr G[regory] would have him provided for. This, and what he states to Mr Peel in this letter as to Mr Gregory’s reception of him are both untrue.
