Petition from John Cole, mariner, Bantry, County Cork, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, for post of tidewaiter or any other government appointment. Outlines experience gained at sea and in service of the Royal Navy, a career curtailed ‘when attacked with a Bowel Complaint he was Obliged to Request his Discharge to obtain medical assistance’; at present ‘having a Wife and Six Children, and out of any Employ [sic]’, petitioner seeks ‘tidewaiters situation at Cork, or any Post’. Encloses character certificate in which is stated that Cole ‘served as midshipman at Sheep’s Head Signal Station’ under command of Henry Ayres, Lieutenant, Royal Navy.

Request from Charles Carleton for a situation of employment under Government

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Charles Carleton, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, regarding application for post and to enclose letter written in support from his father, James Carleton. Enclosure by James Carleton makes recollection of past loyalty to establishment and service to government. As a reinforcement of personal allegiance, he recalls that ‘In the year 1793 I was in the office of Chief Magistrate, a year memorable in the Annals of Ireland…the Privy Council sitting at night when the then Attorney General, now Lord Norbury [John Toler] had me from the Mansion House to receive instructions on the measures to be adopted on the following day, when the streets were to be occupied by Artillery under direction of the Civil Powers disturbances occasioned by the Green Linnets as then called under command of Archibald Hamilton Rowan and Napper Tandy’; as further proof of loyalty, he submits ‘in the year 1796 the first Troop of Yeoman Cavalry that appeared mounted and disciplined in the city of Dublin was that under my command’; also mentions his patronage of government interest in elections in Cork, Tipperary and Limerick. Concludes with recommendation of son, Charles Carleton, a graduate of University of Dublin, for ‘Patronage and Protection’.

Request from Thaddeus Connellan for advance of the Irish Bible

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Thaddaeus Connellan, 3 Percy Street, London, England, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting to have the Irish Bible forwarded to him and anticipating the positive effects for society. Observes that ignorance of spiritual matters together with drinking and card playing are endemic amongst the native Irish, but enthuses ‘that many of my scholars meet on Sundays and hold meetings with their Neighbours where the Tenets of popery are freely discussed with much sense and Judgment and a great quantity of the Scriptures is much sought for; known they are not in readiness yet the Committee of the Bible Society granted me 500 copies of the Gospel of St Matthew as soon as ready to give my scholars’.

TITLE:

Request from John Clements seeking compensation for loss of a cross channel sailing vessel

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of John Clements, shipwright, Ringsend, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting compensation for loss of an express packet. Provides outline of circumstances of loss of cutter, valued at £700, which was in use as a cross channel mail conveyance from Dublin to Holyhead. It is stated that on 4 November 1816, the master took on board Reverend Charles Beresford and his family, whom had in possession an order issued by the General Post Office, containing instructions that the vessel was to convey him to Holyhead or any other port in the vicinity; having reached Holyhead, Beresford indicated that he wished to proceed to Caernarvon harbour, Wales, where under the charge of a pilot, the vessel ‘struck on a sandbank and was totally wrecked’. In these circumstances, he appeals to receive ‘the fair value of his vessel or such other relief or compensation as your honor may think just and reasonable’. Reproduced at base of letter is copy of order held by Beresford signed by Edward Smith Lees, Secretary of General Post Office, dated 3 November 1816.
