Observations on character of parish priest Reverend John Farnan from Richard Cuppaidge |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Richard Cuppaidge, East Hill, Athlone, County Westmeath, to William Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, with observations on the character of Reverend John Farnan. States from his examination, that Farnan ‘is a person of idle and disorderly habits and has been interfering in the clerical duties of the priests at both sides of the water’. Encloses memorial of Reverend John Farnan, Roman Catholic clergyman of the Diocese of Clogher, addressed to Earl Talbot, requesting financial support as he is ‘deprived of the people’s confidence, and…every means of support’ because of circulation of allegation purporting him “to be a spy, sent by Government to Athlone, for some base purpose”’; recites that his name was reviled from the pulpit of Dr Plunket, Bishop of Elphin, who informed worshippers “He knew a similar character, sent by Government in the year 1798, to Belfast, who had been thrown over the bridge there and drowned”. Such words, Farnan contends, are likely to bring about his assassination; he does not understand ‘how he has merited such treatment, except for inculcating on the minds of the people, both publickly [sic] and privately…their obligation of being obedient to the laws of the country’. |
