Letter from William Gore, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing memorial of William Haliday, asking that petition of Michael Hearn is stopped, and also copy report of Robert Borrowes, solicitor, Stamp Office, Dublin, on the case. Encloses petition of Haliday, Arran Quay, Dublin, outlining financial difficulties arising from arrears due him from Edward Smyth, for whom he acted as rent receiver; and referring to an ‘outrageous attack’ on his property by Hearn, a relative of Smyth, who subsequently pressed for proceedings in the courts against Haliday. Also includes copy report of Borrowes to Commissioners of Stamp Duties, relative to a parcel of unstamped acknowledgments passed by Haliday, in which he conveys opinion of the Attorney General that the circumstances, like an earlier one of the same nature, ‘is not a fit case for prosecution’.
