Papers concerning treatment of 2 Irish weavers in Manchester, England

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from George Archer, secretary to Thomas McKenny, Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mansion House, Dublin, to William Gregory, concerning the case of John Hyland and Edward King, weavers, both recently transported with their families back to Ireland after being resident in Manchester, England for 17 years. Notes that the seizure of their goods and subsequent deportation, 'appears to be quite inconsistent with the obvious intent and meaning of the statute recently made in respect to Irish paupers residing in England'. Encloses the petition of Hyland and King to the Lord Mayor of Dublin explaining their treatment by the parish of Manchester, and requesting assistance for themselves and their families. Also the affidavit of Edward King, signed by King with an 'X', 21 June 1819; and the affidavit of John Hyland, signed by Hyland, 21 June 1819. Both sworn before, and signed by, Thomas McKenny, Lord Mayor of Dublin.

Requests that government grants him the power to regain possession of the ship. Encloses affidavit of Peyton Gamble Meares, Deputy Marshal of the Admiralty, 44 Grafton Street, Dublin, describing the ship's original seizure in Warrenpoint, an assault on Meares by some of its passengers, and the ship's subsequent escape to Dublin.

Letter from Richard Archer, assistant to Reverend Forster Archer, Inspector General of Prisons, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a letter from William Ball to Forster Archer, concerning various attempts made by prisoners to escape from the jail at Armagh. Notes the state of overcrowding in the jail and in particular describes a recent escape attempt by several convicts sentenced to transportation. Lists the name of each man and details on their circumstances. Annotation by Dublin Castle official records that the convicts 'will be removed as soon as the convict ship arrives', 2 June 1819.

Letter from Reverend Henry Archdall, Kilmeaden glebe, Kilmeaden, County Waterford, Church of Ireland rector of Kilmeaden, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning the hunger amongst his parishioners following the failure of last year's potato crop; the situation of the poor, many of whom would be dead but for the House of Recovery in Waterford; and the lack of employment for labourers and mechanics in the area. Requests government relief. Subsequent annotation by William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, states that there is no fund at the Lord Lieutenant's disposal to offer the relief requested.
