Letter from Anne Knox, patroness of the Society for the Relief of Sick and Indigent Room Keepers of the city of Londonderry, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, on behalf of the ladies of the society, concerning their charitable works and Flax Fund. Encloses a petition of the ladies of the Society for the Relief of Sick and Indigent Room Keepers, including Lady Hill, president, and Lady Ferguson, Mrs. Bateson, and Miss Weld, vice presidents, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting government financial assistance to maintain their charitable fund which purchases flax and offers employment to women in spinning the flax. Notes the particular distress of 1816 and 1817, increasing the numbers seeking help from the society. Signed by Ann Watt, Flax Fund Treasurer, 6 July 1819. Includes a copy of reply of William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, to Anne Knox, stating that there are no funds at the Lord Lieutenant's disposal to assist them, 20 July 1819.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend Forster Archer, Inspector General of Prisons Office, 70 Camden Street, Dublin, Inspector General of Prisons Ireland, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the attempted escape of convicts from the jail at Maryborough [Portlaoise], Queen's County [County Laois] and the subsequent charges made against Private David Knight, 2nd battalion of the Rifle Brigade, a guard posted in the court yard of the jail, 5 July 1819. Forster suggests changes to the design of the prison to prevent future escapes. Encloses the minutes of an inquiry into the conduct of John Clarke, gaoler, and William Southerland, turnkey, Maryborough Gaol, 28 June 1819. Also a letter from Archer to Gregory, on Archer's handling of the matter, and on the conduct of Clarke, and the punishment of Knight, the guard, 7 July 1819.

Letter from Reverend Forster Archer, Newtown Mount Kennedy, County Wicklow, Inspector General of Prisons Ireland, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the omission of the names of 2 convicts from Archer's return of prisoners held in Carlow jail. Archer attributes the error to the rapidly declining health of Dr. Fitzgerald, the local inspector of prisons, who had originally supplied the information.

File of papers relating to a request from artists of Dublin city to be granted a charter to establish a society under the name of ‘The Royal Academy of Ireland’, to combat the neglect of the arts. Includes copies of the memorials from the artists, signed by a number of painters, to Earl Whitworth, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, [1815]; lists of Dublin artists involved including William Ashford and Robert Lucius West, [1815]; a printed ‘Address from the Hibernian Society of Artists to the Right Honourable and Honourable The Dublin Society’, condemning the actions of these artists, ‘a few discontented members of the Hibernian Society’, 1815 ; a printed pamphlet of the ‘Report Laid before the General Committee of Artists of Ireland, by their Sub-Committee at their General Stated Meeting, on the 6th of January 1818’; and letters from Solomon Williams to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle and to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, respecting the claims of the artists of Dublin, including a statement prepared by Williams on the history of the artists and arts in Ireland, July 1818.

Letter from William Proby, [Arklow, County Wicklow], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a petition of 'the Gentlemen, farmers, traders and other inhabitants of the town and constablewick of Arklow', to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting permission to hold 5 additional fairs every year in Arklow. Also requests that these fair days should remain free from any toll or custom. Petition is signed by 56 of the town's inhabitants, some also stating their occupation.

Papers concerning Board of Health for Arklow, concerning funding difficulties of Wicklow fever hospital

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from William Acton, West Aston [Westaston], near Rathdrum, County Wicklow, member of Board of Health for Arklow, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning the fever hospital in Wicklow. States that having opened in 1818, the hospital has run out of funds to continue, and requires government assistance. Emphasises the urgency of the case, as 'we are not at present able to admit any patient and every day's delay is of the utmost consequence'. Requests to know how many signatures of Board of Health members would be required for an application for aid, 1 February 1819. Also a petition from members of the Board of Health for Arklow, requesting a loan of £50 from the treasury to fund the fever hospital.
