Highlights the plight of the poor, especially widows and orphans, 29 September 1819. Refers to the effects of the fever epidemic, urging compassion to be shown to rich and poor alike, 1 October 1819. Refers to his survey of the counties of Armagh and Monaghan, highlighting sectarian disturbances in the area, including an ambush by orangemen on a group of roman catholics returning from Armagh Cup Race. Condemns a local magistrate, rector Smith, for showing 'no Justice' to catholics. Letter from Reverend Forster Archer, Inspector General of Prisons, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on the presence of a Catholic priest, James Bannyn, amongst the prisoners at Philipstown [Daingean] jail, King's County [County Offaly] having been sent there along with 3 others, following an attempted escape from the bridewell at Birr, King's County. Forster encloses a copy of the instruction to the keepers of Parsonstown and Philipstown jails, signed by W[illiam] L'Estrange, magistrate of King's County, ordering Bannyn's commital to Philipstown jail. It charges Bannyn with attempting to administer unlawful Ribbonmen oaths and of being a vagrant, 'going about the country drinking and doing mischief'. |
