Memorandum concerning recommendations for of printing of copies of statutes for use of Irish magistracy

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Memorandum by 'GH' to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning costs for the printing of statutes each year for the use of every magistrate in Ireland. Memorandum suggests that only those statutes 'useful and necessary for the Magistrates' should be printed, thus making 'a great saving to the Public'. Encloses a list of the Acts of Parliament for 1819, dividing them into categories of those deemed 'useful and necessary' to magistrates in Ireland, and those which are 'not requisite', and detailing the numbers of pages to be printed for each act.

Regrets that typically, 'the "Free [emphasis on 'Free'] Schools of Royal Foundation" have no pretensions to the appellation', 18 December 1818. Also letter from Burrowes, Portora, Enniskillen, to Chief Secretary's Office, expressing thanks for the reply to his proposal and referring to the board of education's views, 17 January 1819.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John Cossart, Ballast Office, Dublin, secretary to commissioners for preserving and improving port of Dublin, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing copies of 2 letters, for the attention of the Lord Lieutenant, on the directions of the corporation for preserving and improving the port of Dublin. Encloses copy of letter from Cossart to James Court, Trinity House London, secretary to corporation of the Trinity House, concerning proposals from the merchants of Waterford, for improvements at Tramore Bay, County Waterford - often mistaken by vessels for Waterford harbour, and where many fatal shipwrecks have occurred. Reports the response of the Corporation for Preserving and Improving the Port of Dublin, following their inspection of the site, including their recommendation to build 3 small towers on Great Newtown Head, Tramore, 14 November 1818. Also copy of letter from Court to Cossart, in reply to above, reporting the opinion of the Elder Brethren of the Trinity House, who agree with the opinion of the Commissioners of Irish Lights on the need to mark the headlands of Tramore Bay, 4 December 1818.

Letter from Sir George Beckwith, Commander of Forces Ireland, Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, to Sir Edward B Baker, military secretary, Dublin Castle, sending a letter from Major General Butler concerning an attempted escape by 2 prisoners from Roscommon jail, County Roscommon. Encloses letter from Major General TL Butler, Athlone, County Westmeath, to Baker, concerning the 'horrid outrage committed' in the attempted escape. Notes that military reinforcements are present at the jail until the 2 prisoners, O'Hara and Brennan, are executed. Also letter from Captain Richard R Nugent, Roscommon, to Lieutenant Colonel Murray reporting on the escape attempt, including the strangling of the turnkey, as well as a recent attempt by a prisoner to bribe a prison guard.
