File of papers relating to annual Donnybrook fair, County Dublin. Includes petition of inhabitants adjacent to Donnybrook village, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting that government take measures to curtail the duration of the fair to that permitted by law. Complains of the 'unnecessarily protracted scenes of public Riot and Debauchery attending the fair' each year and encouraging drunkenness, low gaming, 'and all sorts of profligacy amongst the lower orders'. Signed by 20 individuals, each giving their address, [May 1819]. Also memorandum from Thomas Langlois Lefroy, judge, giving his legal opinion concerning the fair's duration in respect to above petition, May 11 1819, plus letter from Lefroy to Alexander Mangin, Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, on the same, 21 Aug 1819. Letter from Thomas Dawson, Letterkenny, County Donegal, captain of revenue police corps, to Alexander Mangin, chief clerk of civil department, Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning his investigation into disturbances at Dunfanaghy, County Donegal, following the suppression of illicit distilleries at Gorthahurk [Gortahork], County Donegal. Commends the conduct of the police following a skirmish between locals and police there. Notes that 'not less than six or seven hundred men' assailed a small number of police. Notes that 2 private distilleries and a large quantity of 'Pot Ale' were destroyed by excise officer and excise police corps. Complains of the treatment of the excise officials in area, and difficulty of their work, since 'The people have their plans so well arranged that the moment the police are seen to move out on duty, the Alarm is instantly given thro the country by Persons who are placed' on guard duty. Adds that 'it will be very difficult nay impossible to put down private Distillation in this county' without firm measures from government. |
