SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Reverend Edward Stopford, Killybegs, County Donegal, Church of Ireland rector of Killybegs, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, recommending William Henry Babington for appointment as a local inspector of fisheries for Killybegs. Emphasises his qualifications for the post and his ‘most strict temperance and sobriety – and in this country, where the intemperate use of spirits paralizes [sic] the exertions, and warps the fidelity, of many of the Minor agents of Government, strict sobriety is no small recommendation’. Encloses the memorial of Babington of Killybegs, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, presenting his qualifications for the post of fisheries inspector, and emphasising his active service on the loyalist side in county Londonderry during the 1798 rebellion. Memorial is certified by Stopford. |

Letter from Michael Fitzherbert Burke to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning an earlier memorial from Burke, Loughrea, County Galway, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting reimbursement for his costs in laying 'the draught of this celebrated military engine…the British Rocket', before the Commander in Chief. Burke claims to be the inventor of the 'British Rocket', 24 September 1819. Also note from Michael Farrell, chief constable of head police office, Dublin, stating that he has attempted to ascertain the residence of Burke, but with no success, stating that he is 'constantly Travelling'. Note also refers to statements made by Burke relating to the Congreve rocket, 1 October 1819. |
