Letter from George Cary, prisoner in Londonderry jail, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining about his treatment in the jail and seeking redress. States that the jailer was 'in a state of intoxication' and struck Cary repeatedly on the head. Complains at the lack of response to his claims from both the sheriff of County Londonderry and the lord mayor, 17 March 1819. Encloses letter from Thomas Kennedy, sheriff of Londonderry to Cary, in reply to Cary's complaint. Kennedy informs him that the jailor denies the charges made against him, and refers him to the Inspector of Prisons, 16 March 1819. |
