Letter from Colonel Peter Carey, Royal Hospital, Dublin, military secretary to Commander of Forces, to Edward Connor, clerk, Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, to confirm that orders have been issued to comply with government's order for the removal of convicts from various county jails across Ireland, to Richmond penitentiary, Dublin. Confirms that relevant high sheriffs will receive the necessary military escorts for the convicts, 9 August 1819. Returns original instruction from Alexander Mangin, chief clerk of civil department, Chief Secretary's Office, issuing the order concerning the removal of the convicts, and stipulating the overland route to be used to move the county Cavan convicts, via Ballinagh, Oldcastle, Athboy, Trim, Black Bull, County Meath. and into Dublin, 5 August 1819. |

Letter from Jones Crawford, Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, magistrate for County Tyrone, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning charges against an excise officer, William Buchanan and his 2 stewards, and the decision of the Attorney General not to proceed with a state prosecution against the men. Emphasises that it will be costly to Crawford to have to prosecute at his own expense, in addition to the expense of defending himself, in turn, from Buchanan's action against him. Encloses statement of the prosecution in the case of Jones Crawford, magistrate, William Noble, high constable of barony of Strabane, County Tyrone, and Andrew McCallion, sub constable of barony of Strabane; against William Buchanan, excise officer in County Tyrone, and Edward Gormly and David Devin, his stewards. Buchanan is charged with professional misconduct concerning his seizure of a still from illicit distillers, and his resisting the authority of the high constable. |

Includes reports of the commissioners of County Cork jail; the commissioners of the Board of Works; opinions of Dr Edward Trevor; and the opinions of Francis Johnston, Board of Works architect. Also includes several letters from Edward Hutchins, a debtor in Cork county jail, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, on the proposed plans; and to Sir William Cusack Smith, Newtown, Tullamore, King's County [County Offaly], enclosing a letter signed by 40 prisoners of the jail, objecting to the loss of their garden, as proposed in the plans, 6 September 1819. Also includes a memorandum containing abstracts of the communications sent from, and received by, the Chief Secretary's Office, on the matter, between December 1818 and August 1819; this is certified in red ink by Francis Johnston, architect to the Board of Works, expressing his support for the estimate drawn up by the grand jury of County Cork, 3 September 1819. |

Letter from James Corbett, 5 Richmond Place, Limerick, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Irish office, London, concerning the wording of the Anonymous Partnership Act of 1781 passed by Irish parliament, and an action taken against him on the basis that the wording of the act is an error. Quotes extracts of a letter he received from Sir John Newport, MP for Waterford city, on the matter. Corbett urges government to confirm that the wording of the act is indeed correct, and not a mistake, as a court of law has recently ruled. Also a note from Sir Thomas Edlyne Tomlins, legal writer and counsel to Irish Office in London, to Grant on the matter, also containing an annotation by William Saurin, Attorney General of Ireland. |
