Letter from Charles Robertson, secretary, Committee of Artists, 7 Hollis Street, Dublin, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting that a copy of a letter, by J Comerford on the question of a Fine Arts charter, be forwarded for information of the Committee of Artists. Also includes detailed letter by Comerford with various observations on the current state of Irish Fine Arts in reference to the proposed charter for the artists of Ireland; considers in detail three main proposals to be incorporated in the charter: first, ‘the establishment of a more respectable school of art, than that at present supported by the Dublin Society’; second, ‘The permanence which it will afford to annual Exhibitions’; and, third, ‘The confirming a greater degree of respectability, on the Arts and Artist here’.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Committee of Artists of Ireland, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting intervention to prevent sale of Exhibition Room on Hawkins Street, Dublin, by Dublin Society and to express hope of gaining benefit from the proposed charter. Claims that Dublin Society are in process of concluding a sale of the premises to ‘Mr Harris of the Theatre Royal’ and that loss of the Exhibition Room ‘would be vitally detrimental to the interests of the said Artists of Ireland’, signed by seven representatives of the Arts. Includes letter from William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, to John George Mulvany, conveying Lord Lieutenant’s view that entitlement in law of the Dublin Society to transfer their property ‘to be decided by the proper tribunal’.

Claims that ‘Wilson’ has employed a replacement officer, while he was absent from work through sickness, contrary to the law; also purports to be related to Lieutenant Armstrong, of Tipperary ‘to whom Ireland is indebted for the transaction of ninety eight [1798]’ and makes mention in favour of position for his brother.
