Expresses hope that Connellan’s health will improve and ‘that his zeal will meet with patronage equal to his deserts’. Enclosed letter from Connellan to Blessington with report that the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge ‘agreed not only to preach the Holy Scriptures in the Irish Language and letters but also the Book of Common Prayer; the copy of Bedell’s Bible which your Lordship gave me was produced and is to be reprinted’; refers also to distribution of biblical books in Ireland and mentions ‘the great spirit of reading the Irish Scriptures now prevailing among my Countrymen’. Also includes letter from a representative of Lord Bishop of Kildare to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, observing that ‘I did not expect to find Lord Blessington a brother labourer in the Vineyard but strange things are every day coming to pass’. |
