Letter from William Gore and Edward Glascock, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, Dublin, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, indicated that an allegation from Henry Thomas O’Neil, respecting ‘gentlemen Killing Game in the vicinity of Kingscourt [County Cavan] without being duly Licensed’ is being investigated and it has been communicated to ‘O’Neil’ that he will receive remuneration in the event of any successful fines being applied; includes letter from Henry Thomas O’Neill, Mill Mount, Kingscourt, County Cavan, to Lord Sidmouth, complaining of unlicensed game hunting and relaying his response to Stamp Office offer of a monetary reward to assist with provision of information which might lead to a prosecution: ‘I would not become an informer if it were to make me, master of all the revenue arising from stamps’: continues ‘In the Co[unty] Monaghan there are only 16 persons who have taken out certificates, tho there are annually more that 70 on one mountain shouting, packs of hounds are Kept and no duty paid’; also includes memorial from O’Neill, Evy [Ivy] Cottage, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, pleading that the issue of unlawful game killing be addressed and requesting that he be given ’authority, to fine such persons and force those who are entitled to take out license so to do’. |

Letter from William Gore, John French and Edward Glascock, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, William Street, Dublin, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, in which they recommend that Bryan Forde, a stamper, be placed ‘at the bottom of the list of Stampers (by which he will lose five pounds a year) instead of being dismissed’ due to his arrival to work ‘in a state of intoxication’; includes memorial from Forde to the Commissioners of Stamp Duties, making appeal that they ‘will not deprive Him of the only source of His existence’, he having made the ‘most solemn resolution never again to Drink during, or previous, to the Hours of His Duty any description of intoxicating Liquore [sic]’; also includes letter from William Browne, supervisor of stampers, Stamp Office, to the Commissioners of Stamp Duties, in support of Forde, ‘always an attentive man to his duty’; also includes letter from Gore and Glascock to Grant, making recommendation for suspension of Forde and appointment of replacement. |
