Letter from Dr Forster Archer, Inspector General of Prisons Office, [Dublin], to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting findings of investigation into allegations made by John Hanly, a prisoner confined in Limerick Gaol. Confides an inquiry was conducted by Alderman Watson, Mayor of Limerick, and that the charges preferred were adjudged groundless: ‘the result of the Enquiry was that in quelling a Riot in the Prison and in defending himself from the assaults of Hanley, the Turnkey did strike him and as it appeared he was justified under immediate circumstances in doing so…that as to the other charge they were not only satisfied that the Turnkey did not purchase the Prisoner’s Bread himself, but that he used all diligence in preventing them from selling it to others’. |

Outline of plan to establish a college for agriculture and rural economy with detail of proposed curriculum and courses of study, remuneration for tutors and professors, and mention of projected acquisition of Barracks of Newbridge, County Kildare, as site for enterprise. Includes short essay entitled ‘Knowledge is Power’ which provides a philosophical rationale for foundation of such an educational structure ‘for the purpose of teaching Agriculture and rural Economy in their various branches and departments, scientifically and practically, to the Landlord, to the Tenant and to the Peasant; and in which School also may be formed and taught the three great Classes of Ploughmen, Herdsmen and Shepherds’: educational provision to be made for sons of gentlemen, farmers and peasants, with determination that ‘No religious distinction should be permitted’; also includes letter from James CE Thome, 9 Salisbury Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, to Walter Thom, remarking that the proposed establishment is ‘calculated to prove beneficial to the best interests of Ireland’ but cautions ‘the only doubt I feel is that you may attempt too much and, as often happens in such a case, be induced afterwards to abandon what is most useful and practicable’; also includes two letters from Thomas Rowlan on subject. |
