Allen Edmundson, Boyle, County Roscommon: on his petition complaining of behavious of management of Boyle Dispensary |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Allen Edmundson, Boyle, County Roscommon, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, stating that he is aware of a rumor to effect that his petition ‘respecting the illegal conduct made use of in the Boyle Dispensary’ has been presented before the Roscommon Grand Jury, and that a report of that body is supportive of Reverend Thomas Hackett, treasurer of the dispensary: complains that due to jury service in Roscommon assizes, he was unaware of the matter and unable to attend; asserts that he has been assiduous in promoting adherence to Acts of Parliament amongst local magistrates, ‘to put a stop to the shameful breach of the Sabbath Day by Selling Goods in Shops, and exposing of them for sale in the streets, carts and Carmen traveling and Public Houses thronged, and sometimes Dances kept up in them on that day’; states also that he had cattle impounded and made exertions to prevent use of bribes to avoid attendance as jurors; indicates that he found little support for his initiatives either among church wardens or magistrates. |
