Letter from anonymous writer, Dublin, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary of Ireland, at Irish Office, London, concerning insolvent debtors' bill, 13 April 1821. Expresses concerns of several men held in Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin of spending longer in prison, if remanded a second time, in order to benefit from the new act. Also anonymous letter from 'Charity' to Grant, on subject, denouncing the imprisonment of a man for debt, and with a family to support, as 'cruel' and 'odious'. Expresses hopes that the new bill will be 'properly framed so as to give a breathing to those who are insolvent', rather than throwing them on the mercy of their creditors, [April 1821]. Also anonymous letter from 'A Philanthropist', County Londonderry, requesting that the amended bill protect the debtor from being 'harassed' by his creditors, 8 April 1921. |

Also the plight of other 'distressed Prisoners now in Confinement for Fees alleged as due to different Officers of the Courts of Law'. Encloses statement detailing the 'different Fees exacted & extorted from unfortunate prisoners to supply the artificial wants of Rich unfeeling Men'. Expresses hope that a clause will be inserted into the new insolvent debtors' bill, to prevent prolonged imprisonment on these grounds, 4; 19 Apr 1821. Annotation on reverse of draft letter of reply from Grant, Irish Office, London, to Alloway, 29 June 1821. Also letter from Alloway to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting to know what will be done with the supplies of coal already in yards when the act takes effect in January 1822. Laments the loss of such a 'valuable, Charitable Establishment of much public utility as a means of checking monopoly, & high prices in times like the present', and emphasises how much demand there has been for coal from the yards amongst the poor, 31 December 1821. |
