Petition of Roman Catholic prisoners held in Newgate prison, Dublin, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, stating their objections to Lawrence Morrissy being appointed as sole Roman Catholic chaplain to the jail, as decided by court order from the Court of King's Bench. States that 'they cannot conscientiously acknowledge this person', and requests that steps are taken to remedy the situation and allow them to practice their religion. Petition signed or marked by 132 Roman Catholic prisoners, 3 January 1821. Encloses copy of court order signed by Walter Bourns [Bourne], deputy clerk of the crown for Court of King's Bench, Dublin, granting Morrissy sole use of the chapel at Newgate prison, December 1820. |

Letter from Samuel Bewley, Robert Fayle, and Jonathan Pim, members of the Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers, appointed in charge of the Society in Ireland, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning case of one of their members, Isaac Gatchell and payment of tithes. Highlights the conduct of the Irish judges involved in the case, and requests government's interference to ensure that such a case does not occur again, 1 June 1821. Encloses statement of case of Isaac Gatchell, of Coolegegan, parish of Clonsast, King's County [County Offaly], prepared by his attorney, Robert C Thorpe. Details the 'cruelty and injustice' suffered by Gatchell, at the hands of local magistrates and the Church of Ireland rector of parish of Clonsast, respecting payment of tithes, and the illegal seizure of Gatchell's property. In particular criticises behaviour of John Toler, Lord Norbury, Lord Chief Justice of Irish Court of Common Pleas, at the subsequent trial, 'who declared that the Church must be supported', [May 1821]. Also note from William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, to William Saurin, Attorney General of Ireland, requesting his opinion on the case, 8 June 1821. Saurin's reply written on note. |
