Letter from Thomas Henry O'Neill, Cavan, concerning abuses of game laws in County Cavan

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Henry Thomas O'Neill, Cavan, County Cavan, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning abuses of the game law, and stating that in County Cavan alone, there are between sixty and one hundred individuals who keep sporting dogs without licence. Requests Grant's interference with O'Neill's application for employment made to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, 4 August 1821. Also petition of O'Neill to Earl Talbot, referring to information provided by O'Neill concerning abuse of the game laws. States that he has new information to offer respecting other counties. Describes how 'So soon as the inspector appears in the county the alarm flies [that] the Dog man is coming, immediately the sporting dogs are sent off until the Inspectors pass by. Some gentlemen send their dogs to be kept by poor men who have nothing to fear or nothing to lose'. Describes how packs of hounds are dispersed around the country 'to avoid duty'. Requests to be employed in the suppression of these abuses across the country, 6 August 1821.

Refers Gregory to Captain William Trench, for verification of his situation, 23 May 1821. Also note from Gregory to 'My dear William', [probably Captain William Trench], requesting to know if Potts is 'fit to be a Peeler'?, 24 May 1821. Annotation below of French's reply, stating that 'He was a great rogue but may have reformed, it is some years since I knew him'.

Letter from ES Flinter, Roscrea, County Tipperary, half pay lieutenant of 97th regiment, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting police employment. States that his name has already been noted by Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, for an appointment. Refers to recent disturbances in barony of Iakerrin [Ikerrin], County Tipperary, including the burning down of two houses and the theft of sheep. States that as a result, the magistrates, '…intend to proclaim it and make application for an extraordinary Police [force] to be placed under Captain Wilson...'. Urges that he may be appointed to the force. Requests that any reply be sent to his address at Jonstown [Johnstown], County Kilkenny.

Petition of Michael Feeghan [Feehan], Queen's County [Laois], detailing persecution of his family by followers of 'Captain Carder'

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Michael Feeghan [Feehan], to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle. States that he rents 10 acres of land from Mrs Stepney of Durrow, Queen's County [County Laois], but has 'become obnoxious to his disaffected Neighbours', because of his 'Industry, improvement of his Ground and the punctual Discharge of his Rent'. Describes the several attacks on his home and property since 1819; also attacks on his sons. States that, 'his Life has been rendered insupportable by various species of Persecution. Requests that his 3 sons be employed in the police establishment, to remove them from danger and poverty [1821]. Encloses threatening letter from 'Captin [Captain] Carder', stating that Feaghan 'must Quit the parish of Durrow….you Blody [sic] informing theif [sic]…or if not the most morose Deth [sic] you must Get. And After Deth your remains must be Consumed into ashes. Both you and your Famely [sic]' [1821].
