Petition of William Kilfoyle, Tipperary, County Tipperary, formerly private in 90th regiment, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting employment in police establishment in County Tipperary under command of Captain Wilcox [Captain Willcocks], chief magistrate of police. Emphasises his military service. Encloses certificates of recommendation [annotation by Chief Secretary's Office official instructs that these be returned to Kilfoyle. There is a copy of their content filed with the petition - these were probably copied by the CSO for reference, before the originals were returned to Kilfoyle]: copy of certificate from Major A Wood of 3rd Royal Veteran Battalion, Cashel, County Tipperary, 7 February 1821; and from Reverend Henry Rose, curate of Tipperary, 27 March 1821.

Emphasises his military service in 96th regiment of foot and the 9th Royal Veteran Battalion. States that he is a pensioner of Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin, and is seeking employment to supplement his 'small annuity', 25 April 1821. Encloses certificate of recommendation from Thomas Lloyd, formerly captain of 96th regiment, 10 April 1821. Also letter from Major Samson Carter, Lodge, Marino, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, responding, as requested by Gregory, to Sullivan's petition. States that all vacancies in the police force under Carter's command in the barony of Raphoe, County Donegal, were already filled prior to date of Sullivan's application, 2 May 1821.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John Thomas Westropp, Ballysteen, Askeaton, County Limerick, magistrate, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, 21 January 1821, enclosing statement of recommendation from the committee for preservation of peace in barony of Kenry, County Limerick, on behalf of Michael Kelly. States they are apprehensive for Kelly's safety, following his assistance in prosecuting men at the last assizes, who had been involved in 'nocturnal outrages'. Requests that he may be found employment in the police force in another part of the country. Signed by John Thomas Westropp; John Waller; Richard Taylor; Thomas Westropp; Edward Villiers Fitzgerald; Francis Langford; and Thomas Davenport, magistrates [January 1821]. Also letter from Gregory to Westropp, stating that Kelly will be appointed to Major Daniel O'Donoghue's police force, 30 January 1821. Also letter from O'Donoghue, Lion's Den, Clonard, County Meath, to Westropp, acknowledging receipt of Westropp's letter, and stating that he has received no orders from government to place Kelly on his force, and that he has currently no vacancies, 16 February 1821.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend Richard Ryan, Rathconnell glebe house, Killucan, County Westmeath, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, recommending the case of Henry Hill, 'a protestant parishioner'. Details how Hill, a policeman, has been persecuted for his part in apprehending a man who he found drinking disloyal toasts in a public house. 'In consequence of this act of duty, the peasantry about Hill have taken up a determination to drive him out of the county', detailing the threats to burn Hill's home and his father's cattle. States that Hill wishes to leave the county, and urges government assistance to find him employment elsewhere.
