SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Resolutions passed by the nobility and gentry of County Limerick, at a meeting held in Limerick city, 28 November 1821 concerning the lawlessness of the county. States that a 'Conspiracy marked by the most determined hostility to the Laws carried on by the most impenetrable Secrecy and pursuing its Objects by the Commission of the most atrocious crimes Exists in this and some neighbouring Counties'. Also states that the large military force in the county has failed to restore law and order. Urges that parliament consider the matter and suggests necessity of using the Insurrection Act. Includes list of 94 names of individuals in attendance at the meeting, chaired by Gerald De Courcy O'Grady, high sheriff of County Limerick. |

States that he and his father were licensed distillers, until new regulations from the revenue board, 'put a stop to Country Distillation', to gratify the monopoly of Dublin distillers, thereby ruining their business. |

Annotation on reverse, of copy of letter of reply from Grant to Oldis, 3 January 1821. Also letter from Oldis to Grant, renewing his request, and emphasising that he 'commands a powerful interest of near 200 freeholders in the County of Tipperary, which have been invariably and disinterestedly used in support of Gov[ernmen]t', [January 1821].
