Letters from Thomas Hudson Codd, Cork, offering his suggestions on various subjects, including trade, excise, manufacture, and debts

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Series of letters from Thomas Hudson Codd, Cork, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, offering his opinion on a variety of subjects relating to government, including butter trade, corn laws, commerce, excise, Irish manufacture, and Ireland's debts, and attacking lawyers and 'stupid commissioners', 21 September 1821. Suggests several plans, and requests that government entrust money to him, to carry out those plans. Also requests compensation or reward for his contributions: 'you come from a state department that has long profited of my communications...', 14 December 1821. Annotations by Chief Secretary's office clerk state 'nonsense' and 'usual' on each letter. For instance, on subject of butter, Codd writes, '…a higher price may be obtained; and that is only to be done by appropriating a sum not less than two hundred thousand pounds into a competent hand; as my self for instance..', 20 August 1821. Also letter from Codd to Duke of York, on the crown prerogative, stating that the British cabinet 'is not the administration, 'tis I who direct it', [1821].

Petition of William Campbell, innkeeper, Coleraine, County Londonderry, to the Lords Chief Justices of Ireland, requesting to be have his licence to sell liquor reinstated. Details his alleged persecution concerning his licence, by Henry Blackard, formerly mayor of Coleraine. Details events of the night of 16 October 1821, when some of the town organised an illumination in support of Queen Caroline. Despite demonstrating his loyalty by allowing 'a transparency of King William with the words of "God save the King" ' in the window of his inn, Campbell explains how Blackard called him 'insolent' and 'disrespectful', 9 June 1821. Encloses letter from JC Beresford, Beech Hill, [County Londonderry], to Campbell, vouching that Campbell was not insolent to Blackard on the night in question, 4 June 1821.
