Includes affidavit of James Davidson, Mill Street, Ennis, stating he overheard the conversation of several disaffected men in the street late on the night of 30th of May; indicating the men spoke of ‘destroying’ a family of the name of Kennedy [likely those who gave protection to the police at the time of the murder of Sgt Robinson at Clondagad] and a priest who assisted; continuing he heard the men say they were spending the night in the woods of [Knockanira] on order to avoid detection by the authorities, being ‘afraid to go home at night’; adding that others of their cast were sleeping in the woods of Lishan [Lisheen]; sworn before Warburton. Letter from William Young, magistrate, Bailieborough Castle, [Bailieborough, County Cavan], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, drawing attention to the agitated state of the surrounding countryside and calling for the imposition of a military party; pointing out that suitable accommodation for such a body of men is readily available and their presence will have a most calming effect on the town and neighbourhood; recalling that a detachment of the 23rd Regiment [of Foot] was previously withdrawn from the town of Bailieborough as was the chief constable of police.

Includes report of James Battersby, Sub-Inspector, Carlow, stating that the dwelling of Patrick O’Neal at Seskin Upper came under attack by a mob of insurgents on the 20th of May; remarking the attackers subjected O’Neal to a serious assault and ‘carded his wife and son on their bare backs’; adding the victims were ordered to give up their land holding. Also includes report by Battersby on a malicious injury to a horse belonging to Michael Furlan who lives near Bagnalstown; observing on the 9th of July the animal was ‘cut across the belly with a sharp instrument’ which incision proved fatal.
