Copy of letter from Major George Warburton, Ennis, County Clare, chief police magistrate for County Clare, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 6 December 1821, enclosing copy of letter from John Wilson Trowsdell, Custom House, Kilrush, County Clare, collector of customs, to Warburton, reporting information he has received 'in the greatest confidence', respecting disturbances in County Clare, and referring to the plans of the Roman Catholics to extirpate the Protestants. Suggests the formation of a 'Protestant Corps' of yeomanry, 4 December 1821. Trowsdell encloses statement of information received. States that the name of the body of disaffected is, 'United Irishman'; refers to their use of oaths, signs and ranks; and states that their chief aim is the massacre of Protestants and 'Protestant blood'. Also details their plans for an uprising on 'Twelfth Night' and refers to belief in millennial predictions of the fall of Protestantism in 1825. Lists the names of various Catholics who are involved in the organisation in vicinity of Kilrush. |
