Encloses copy of letter from [Captain] 'Rock', 'Council Chamber', Ennis, to Warburton, informing him that the successful campaigns in neighbouring counties, to prevent payment of taxes and tithes, will soon be introduced in Clare. Anticipates 'a speedy Emancipation from the Iron Rule of the relentless Despots...' Warns Warburton to show 'Moderation' in the approaching struggle, noting that, 'your Death Warrant has already been signed….', 7 December 1821.

Letter from Francis Woodley, Frankfort, County Cork, near Tallow, County Waterford, magistrate, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on his investigation of the valuation of tithes in his neighbourhood, 'for I think it right to divert the attention of the people from dwelling on insurrection..'. Also reports his cooperation with the parish priest of Tallow, Dr O'Donnell, and the parish priest of Conna, Dr Daly, 11 December 1821. Encloses affidavit of Ann Cahile, servant, parish of Ahern, County Cork, sworn before Woodley, 10 December 1821, detailing the particulars of a conversation she had with a man on the way home from Tallow fair, referring to disaffection in County Cork, the murder of Protestant farmers, and the acquisition of arms and gunpowder.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Richard Willcocks, Rathkeale, County Limerick, chief police magistrate for County Limerick, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting the arrest of 9 persons charged with assaulting Catherine Hassitt, a crown witness, on her return from the last Limerick assizes, and also assaulting the 2 policemen who escorted her. States that the case is ideal to be tried at the Limerick Special Commission. Suggests that whipping would be a useful punishment in his district; and expresses his support for the use of the Insurrection Act, in breaking the 'Wicked Spirit' of the disaffected, 11 December 1821. Encloses copy of the committal issued by Willcocks, to the keeper of County Limerick jail, for the men arrested: Patrick Brown; Thomas Lee; Morgan Cregan; George Darcy; Patrick Enright; Thomas Keefe; John Finn; and Patrick Cregan, 11 December 1821.
