SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Francis Woodley, Frankfort, County Cork, near Tallow, County Waterford, magistrate, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, clarifying his previous report of a threatening notice posted at Conna, County Cork, stating that it only referred to tithes, and not rents. Reports that his son has almost completed collection of the county cess, and reports not 'the slightest appearance of disaffection' in the barony of [Kinnatalloon]. Complains of inactivity of fellow magistrates in disturbed parts of the neighbourhood. Recommends Captain Bowles, commander of the Tallow yeomanry corps, to be appointed as a magistrate.

Recommends that the sub constables of the peace preservation establishment, should also be placed on the same new pay scale, 'otherwise a jealousy must naturally exist between the Parties'.

Letter from Richard Willcocks, Limerick, County Limerick, chief police magistrate for County Limerick, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on the conclusion of the Special Commission in County Limerick and Limerick city, and praising its success, and the efforts of those involved. Expresses hope that the capital convictions will, '...prove to the Country that the Laws can still be supported & executed'. Reports on arrangements for several executions due to commence on 31 December. Also refers to the request of Reverend Norman Garstin [Church of Ireland rector of Kilpeacon, County Limerick] for police protection in the recovery of his tithes, and urges government not to involve Willcocks and his police force, as their duties are already 'weighty'.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Major George Warburton, Ennis, County Clare, chief police magistrate for County Clare, to William Saurin, Attorney General of Ireland, reporting on his inquiries into 2 cases referred to him. Recommends bail be granted to 2 men, wrongly identified for assaulting a member of the preventive water guard, and also to 5 men arrested by Sir John Read, stating that the latter was a 'malicious & a groundless charge', 22 December 1821. Also copy of the committal papers for John Flanery [Flannery] junior, charged upon the oath of Thomas Daly, with tendering an illegal and seditious oath to Daly; and for the committal of John Flanery's associates: Thomas Flanery; Thady Flanery; Michael Flanery; and Daniel Flanery, for breaking into Daly's house. Committal originally signed by Sir John Read, magistrate, and Thomas Darcy, jailer of County Clare jail, Ennis, 6 December 1821. Also letter from James McNamara, Ayle, County Clare, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing petition of the Flanerys, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, stating that that the charges levelled at them by Daly, are 'utterly false', and requesting that they be granted bail. Includes a statement from several magistrates and gentlemen of barony of Feakle, County Clare, stating that the Flanerys are men of good character, who have been falsely sworn against. Signed by Thomas McInerny, parish priest of Feakle; Cornelius O'Callaghan of Maryfort; Robert Westropp of Fort Anne; and John O'Callaghan, Ballycorban [December 1821].
