Letter from Richard Willcocks, Cashel, County Tipperary, chief police magistrate for County Limerick, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 25 December 1821, enclosing copies of 5 letters from 'the unfortunate men now under sentence of death in Limerick' jail: John and Martin Grady; Michael Kelly; John Mullane; Timothy Shea; and John Histon, 23 December 1821-24 December 1821. Willcocks advises, that having already made examples by executing men convicted at the Limerick Special Commission, a show of mercy from government might now also be 'beneficial', particularly in resulting in the surrender of arms in the possession of the disaffected.

Letter from Major George Warburton, Ennis, County Clare, chief police magistrate for County Clare, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing concerns at plans to concentrate the deployment of the detachments of the 93rd regiment stationed in County Clare, and to use the yeomanry in their place. Warburton reiterates his concerns at depending solely on the yeomanry in certain places. Also reporting the 'barbarous' murder in Cratloe, County Clare, of an individual named Stack, who had provided information on an earlier murder in the same area.

Letter from William Webb, Grouse Hall, Carndonagh, County Donegal, chief police magistrate for County Donegal, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting, as requested, his opinion on a proposal to withdraw the military from Ennishowen [Inishowen], if Webb's police establishment was increased in size by fifty constables. Recommends the measure, but warns that the barony would not be able to bear the additional expense, 26 December 1821. Encloses statement of estimated expenses for the barony of Ennishowen police establishment for one year. Includes itemised estimates for salaries; clothing; great coats; horses; forage; and medicines.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Richard Cavendish, 2nd baron Waterpark, Cahir [Caher] Abbey, County Tipperary, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning [plans to separate] the Church of Ireland livings of Cahir [Caher], and Grange St. John Baptist, County Tipperary. Refers to his consultation with Charles Brodrick, Archbishop of Cashel, who stated that the 2 livings have 'always been held' together. Waterpark notes that Lord Glengall, 'had the promise of both of these livings for my Son'. Adds a postscript stating that County Tipperary requires the Insurrection Act, referring to the night time activities of armed bodies of men.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Edward Wilson, Thurles, County Tipperary, chief police magistrate for County Tipperary, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on his inquiry, as requested, into claims made in an anonymous letter received at Dublin Castle, from County Tipperary, concerning those involved in disturbances in the county. In particular, to claims that John Mandeville is a banditti leader. Wilson reports that the letter has been written, 'from private and vindictive motives'. Also reports on outrages recently committed in the proclaimed baronies of County Tipperary, and the fracturing of a policeman's skull following an attack on him, 28 December 1821. Wilson returns the anonymous letter signed 'GP', Clonmel, County Tipperary, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, making various allegations concerning the disaffected and the possession of arms and gunpowder [December 1821].
