Includes letter from Brownrigg, Ardinode, County Kildare, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 10 December 1821, reporting the case and enclosing copy of the examination of each man, Stephen Mahony; Patrick Small; Thomas Killen; and John Mackilroy [sic], 9 December 1821. Also encloses 2 letters found in the possession of Pat Small: one from Thomas Clavan, Philipstown [Daingean] jail, King's County [County Offaly], 1 December 1821 addressed to 'Dear Mother', complaining of conditions in the jail, and requesting that she send him a pair of shoes; and one from Edward Claffy, Philipstown jail, 2 December 1821. Letter from Colonel John Maxwell Barry, Newtownbarry [Bunclody], County Wexford, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 12 December 1821, enclosing copy of affidavit of Walter Rice, farmer of Crowsgrove, County Carlow, sworn before Barry, 5 December 1821, stating that his dairy building and corn were maliciously burned. Barry, however informs Grant that, 'I am, decidedly of the opinion that the outrages were perpetrated by himself, or some one of his own Family'. Also encloses copy of affidavit of Mary Humphreys of Ballyna Park [Ballinapark], County Wexford, sworn before Barry, James Boyd and Richard Kerr, magistrates, 10 December 1821, describing how she was threatened by an armed gang, who denounced tithes. |
