2 letters from Colonel Alexander Armstrong, Edenderry, King's County [County Offaly], brigade major of yeomanry, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, [both letters sent together], in reply to Gregory's request for information on John Hurst, a farmer. Armstrong advises Gregory to contact Lord Miltown, Hurst's landlord, for more information, and refers to the frequent attacks and threats made against Hurst 'by the disaffected & turbulent people around him'. Also details an interview with Hurst, concerning Hurst's claim for remuneration for loss of his cattle. Also referring to the general unrest in King's County and County Kildare, 23; 26 February 1821. Also note by official in Chief Secretary's Office concerning obtaining information on Hurst's case [February 1821].

Letter from Henry Alcock, Waterford, County Waterford, magistrate, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 23 April 1821, enclosing copy of statements of Francis Power, church warden of parish of Kilculliheen and George Mahony, police constable of Waterford city, sworn before Alcock [not present], containing information on the feeling of the lower orders. Alcock states that he has been asked by the minister and wardens, to provide military assistance to enforce payment of church rates, and requests advice of government on how to proceed.

Letter from Colonel Alexander Armstrong, Edenderry, King's County [County Offaly], brigade major of yeomanry, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the case of John Hurst, farmer in County Kildare, and the refusal of the grand jury of County Kildare to grant him compensation for his losses. Refers to the 'system of intimidation' which renders it difficult to persuade individuals to give evidence, 27 April 1821. Encloses petition of Hurst, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, detailing threats made against him and attacks on his home, and requesting compensation [April 1821]. Also encloses receipt for money paid by Armstrong to Hurst for a yeomanry force to protect Hurst's property, 16 March 1821, and copy of sworn affidavit of Thomas Halligan of Kilshanroe, County Kildare, sworn before John Brownrigg, magistrate for County Kildare, 28 April 1821, stating that he was assaulted for attending the assizes at Naas to testify on behalf of Hurst.
