Letter from Michael Aylmer, Kilcock, County Kildare, magistrate, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 15 September 1821, enclosing papers concerning recent outrages committed in barony of Ikeathy and Oughterany, County Kildare. Includes copies of sworn affidavits from residents of the barony: Thomas Boyne of Nicholastown; Patrick Short, herdsman, of Kilmackenona; Patrick Dunne of Kilcock; James Barry, farmer, of Ballykeenan; Richard Louchan of Baltracey; and Thomas Frayne of Barreen, detailing the disturbances in the barony, 1;15 September 1821. Also copies of sworn affidavits from Patrick Cunningham, police sub-constable for barony of Ikeathy; and Samuel Lawson and William Grace, sub constables for barony of Ikeathy, 14 September 1821. All affidavits sworn in presence of Aylmer or Thomas Kearney, magistrate. Also encloses printed handbill, dated 31 August 1821, entitled 'County Kildare Murder and Reward', detailing the list of names of subscribers, who have pledged money towards a reward to catch those responsible for the recent murder of Dennis Murray. Letter from anonymous writer styled 'A Farmer', to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning possible plans to proclaim the barony of Ikeathy, County Kildare. States that there was no meeting of inhabitants on the subject, and that any request received by government, came from a few individuals, 'whose motives are not the purest'. Warns that any such move is unnecessary and will ruin the famers. Urges government, 'to preserve us from this cruel Taxation'. Postmarked 20 September 1821.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Abraham Allen, Shanbally, County Cork, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, detailing the reasons for the disturbances in County Limerick, which he attributes chiefly to the 'supiness & misconduct of the Magistrates'. States that the result is that individuals accused of crimes go unpunished. Also attributes the disturbances to the system of 'oppression' orchestrated by Alexander Hoskins, land agent to Lord Courtenay; and to the imposition of tithes. Also refers to the recent murder of Richard Going, chief magistrate of police for County Limerick.
