Letter from 'Matilda, A Female Loyalist', [postmarked Rathkeale, County Limerick], to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the bloodshed and murder in County Limerick, and urging government to take measures to check the rebellion. Highlights the inactivity of magistrates and the 'luke warm' loyalty of the gentlemen composing grand juries, who are 'rebels in their hearts'. Also refers to Shaugnessy, held in Limerick prison, whom it is said, government are too afraid to hang. Urges government to disband the 'Peelers', bring in the regular army, and proclaim the county; also to execute those involved and 'Stick their Heads in public places as examples, while their bodies are consuming with quick Lime in Croppies hole'. |

Also encloses report of the magistrates of County Tipperary, signed by Birch, concerning the arrest of Caffrey, 'so calling himself', at Roscrea, 22 January 1821, for being a stranger, wandering in the area. States that Caffrey claimed that his real name was Patrick Farrel, a labourer. Birch states that he may have been involved in a recent murder in County Kildare, and gives a detailed description of Caffrey/Farrel's appearance and clothing. |
