Letter from John Barter, Cooldaniel, parish of Kilmichael, County Cork, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing petition to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting compensation for losses of about £400 sustained due to an attack on his property and theft of his possessions by Whiteboys; refers to two attacks on his property in January 1822, the most serious of which saw ‘several thousand armed rebels’ assail his dwelling and ‘utterly demolished the inside and outside doors, windows, staircase, cornices, furniture &tc besides carrying off all the clothes of the family…together with house linen, some plate & jewelry and a valuable horse…which died in consequence of the abuse it received the next day from one of their Leaders’: with verification of account from John Browne, magistrate, Samuel Swele and John Tonson, of the Muskerry Corps of Cavalry. |
