Letter from John Musgrave, Tourin, Cappoquin, County Waterford, magistrate, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning lawlessness in the barony of Decies within Drum, County Waterford, and the conduct of ,'...idle persons, possessed of a small property, & resident in that Barony, who, having no regular occupation, are ready at all times to promote smuggling, or any other mode of obtaining a livelihood without industry'. Warns government not to appoint any of those individuals as police high [chief] constable, suggesting the appointment of a stranger 'wholly unconnected' with the area. Also offers use of his land, rent free, to build any accommodation required for the new police force. |
