Letter from Rear Admiral Lord Colville, commander in chief on Irish coast, onboard 'Semiramis', Cork harbour, County Cork, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting to have information on the final destination of the ship Surprize which was brought from Plymouth, England, for use as a convict hulk: indicates that he has prevented the captain’s return to England with the ship’s mast, riggings and furniture, as it will be required if the vessel is needed for use at Kingstown [Dunleary; Dún Laoghaire] harbour.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Rear Admiral John Colville, commander in chief on Irish coast, onboard 'Semiramis', Cork harbour, County Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting orders from the Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, to release the sloop 'Arab' from quarantine restrictions, placed on her since her contact with the ship 'Bee' from Gibraltar, 22 June 1822; with subsequent annotation by Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, granting the request and forwarding the matter to the Privy's Council's Office. Also note from offical in Privy Council's Office, stating that an order of council has been transmitted to the commissioners of customs, authorising the release of the 'Arab' from quarantine 27 June 1822; also copy of the order in council sent to the commissioners of customs, signed by Wellesley and 6 members of the Privy Council, including William Downes, Lord Chief Justice, 27 June 1822.
