Includes letter from Edwards, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing his 'astonishment' at the news and defending his actions. Refers to the conduct of members of the Wicklow yeomanry corps, in wishing to assemble on 12 July, 31 January 1822. File also contains letter from Edwards to Goulburn, 1 January 1823, enclosing copy of letter from William Cosby, brigade major of yeomanry, to the commanding officer of the Wicklow yeomanry, originally dated 9 July 1822, conveying the instruction of the Lord Lieutenant, as contained in a letter from William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, informing the yeomanry not to parade or march on 12 July. |

Explains that during the week of their escape, both men had been selected to act as prison cooks - part of a scheme employed in the prison to reward prisoners displaying good conduct, 3 January 1823. Encloses copy of depositions of Henry Kirwan, turnkey, and his brother Robert Kirwan, concerning their role in releasing the 2 prisoners from the inner jail into the yard, given before the committee of superintendence of Carlow jail, 19 December 1822. |
