Letter from Abraham Denroche, denying knowledge of an anonymous letter concerning Theatre Royal Riots |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Abraham Denroche, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, proprietor of the 'The Moderator' newspaper, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing printed copy of letter from anonymous writer styled 'Candidus', 4 January 1823, concerning a proposed county meeting, to send an address to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, concerning the recent disturbances at Theatre Royal, Dublin. Candidus suggests that the county should instead send, 'An Address of congratulation to his Excellency on the acquittal of his countrymen from the imputation of a murderous conspiracy, would best befit the occasion, because it is a result at which so true a PATRIOT must unfeignedly rejoice'. Denroche refutes rumours in circulation that this letter emanated from the offices of his newspaper, 8 January 1823. |
