SCOPE & CONTENT: |

Includes petition of Richard Handcock of Athlone, County Westmeath, and of William Gustavus Adamson of Carn Park, County Westmeath, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting an advance of money from the funds for public works, to construct a new line of road, 'to shorten the distance between Athlone and Mullingar', County Westmeath. Petition signed by Handcock and Adamson, Athlone, 6 October 1822. Also letter from William Handcock, 1st viscount Castlemaine, Phoenix Park, Dublin, a governor of County Westmeath, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of £400 for employment of the poor on construction of new line of road from Athlone to Mullingar, as presented for at summer assizes, 30 January [1823; CSO index annotation states 1822, but this is possibly an error]. Also memorandum prepared by CSO official on the subject, with annotations of legal opinion of John Sealy Townsend, KC and legal adviser to Chief Secretary's Office, 29 January; 1 February 1823. Memorandum accompanied by certified copy of County Westmeath grand jury presentment at summer assizes 1822, of sum of £50 towards new intended road, 'which is to be raised by instalments of fifty Pounds at each Assizes until all is Paid'. Copy dated 28 January 1823, and verified by B Riky. |
