SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend John Chester, Mallow, County Cork, Church of Ireland rector of Ballyclough, Mallow, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, emphasising the 'rapid advance' of disaffection in the country and the extent of the nightly raids for firearms and ammunition. States that he and his proctor have been threatened, and that the disaffected, 'also avowed their determination to cut off, and nail to the Church Door, the Ears of Mr Cotter -the respectable Clergyman of Castlemagner Parish [Mallow, County Cork] for presuming to tear down the enclosed notice', 7 November 1821. Encloses the notice referred to in his letter, entitled 'A General Notice', and signed 'Captain Rock', warning of the consequences for those who try to demand tithe and rent payments [November 1821].

Letter from John Church, Gurtenard, Listowel, County Kerry, magistrate of County Kerry, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning meetings of Roman Catholic inhabitants in the area. Annexes a copy of the resolutions passed at a meeting of Roman Catholic inhabitants of the parishes of Murher and Knockanure, County Kerry, held 11 November 1821, condemning the violent disturbances in County Limerick, and expressing thanks to Thomas Staughton and Reverend Anthony Stoughton, 'for their kind and considerate mode of dealing with us respecting our Tithes; by which one of our heavy burthens has been considerably lightened - and we sincerely regret that all other Proprietors of Tithes do not follow an example which would in a great measure tend to tranquilize the minds of the people at large'.

File of papers relating to investigation of dispute between Major Samson Carter, police magistrate of County Donegal, and the board of excise, respecting illicit distillation and smuggling. Includes letter from Carter, Grouse Hall, Carndonagh, County Donegal, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, complaining of allegations made against him by Daniel Logie, the board of excise's local inspector, and defending the work of his police force in suppressing illicit stills, 14 November 1821. Also includes aggregate return of detections made by Major Carter's police force in barony of Inishowen, County Donegal, for year ending 31 July 1821, including numbers of stills, gallons of pot ale, and bales of leaf tobacco, discovered. Return signed by Carter.

Reports attacks on houses by groups of disaffected men, in search of arms and ammunition, and a subsequent skirmish between military forces and 'Whiteboys'. [this letter was presumably forwarded by Mahony to Dublin Castle, for information of the Chief Secretary's Office].
