SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File of papers relating to robbery of the Belfast mail coach. In particular, concerning investigations into the response of police stationed at Garristown, County Dublin, to the robbery. Includes letter from Sir Edward Smith Lees, General Post Office, Dublin, secretary to Irish Post Masters General, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning claims that 'the Police stationed at Garristown had acknowledged to have heard the firing on the night the Belfast Mail Coach was attack'd'. Lees concludes from his inquiries, that, 'had the Police attended on hearing the discharge of arms, there can be no doubt, but that the entire Gang would have been apprehended', 8 January 1823. Encloses copy of letter from John Armstrong, Drogheda, County Louth, chief peace officer at Drogheda, to Lees, reporting on his conservation with a policeman, stating that they had heard shots, but that it was 'out of their District'; attaches copy of letter received from William Stewart, Garristown, chief police magistrate, to Armstrong, offering the services of his police, in apprehending those responsible for the robbery [4 January 1823]. Also includes material relating to application of Hiram Reade, of Birr, King's County [County Offaly], to claim the reward offered, for the apprehension of James Kelly, one those responsible for the robbery, 9 December 1823. |

2 letters from William Logan, 40 Mecklenburgh [Railway] Street, Dublin, local inspector of Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, proposing a public saving in the marshalsea's medical department, due to a reduction in the number of surgical medical cases. States that all duties can be undertaken by the physician, rather than also requiring a surgeon, 10; 30 January 1823. Encloses in latter, a return detailing surgical cases in the Four Courts Marshalsea for 12 month period, ending 1 January 1823 [not present]. Also letter from Sir T Charles Morgan, 35 Kildare Street, Dublin, physician, to Goulburn, reporting, as requested, on the proposed changes to the medical department of the marshalsea; he approves of the plan but recommends that the marshalsea retain a designated surgeon, albeit not in receipt of a permanent salary, 24 February 1823. Also letter from Sir Charles William Flint, Irish Office, London, resident Under Secretary of Irish Office, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting Goulburn's opinion on the matter, 17 March 1823. |
