Letter from Theophilus Jones, assistant barrister for County Leitrim, 8 Merrion Square North, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting in response to a complaint from Charles Grogan of Mohill in County Leitrim, alleging his case was not heard by the court; refers to an interview with the clerk of the peace who confirmed that Grogan had been called twice in respect of case but ‘he failed to appear when called on to prosecute it’. Encloses memorial from Grogan to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking redress over failure to secure a court hearing in the prosecution of a case against Myles Confry and others in connection with the recovery of a cow which had been distrained in lieu of rent for a half year; claims to have served for 22 years in Mohill Cavalry and also on the special vestry of his parish and complains of ‘No justice done for me’ despite bringing allegations before local magistrate, William O’Brian, and attending court.

Letter from Henry Luttrell, clerk of the pipe, Irish Court of Exchequer, Albany, London, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, declining an offer of a single room in the King’s Inns, Dublin, on grounds of insufficient space and requesting use of two adjacent rooms in the building for custody of records and discharge of duties of office; he requests issue of orders to have accommodation fitted out. Also letter from John Tew Armstrong, deputy clerk of the pipe, 16 North Frederick Street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting directions be given to the architect for fitting out of offices in King’s Inns with ‘Alphabets and Presses’ before commencement of public transactions. Encloses copy letter from Goulburn, Irish Office, London, to Luttrell, indicating that a single room has been allocated for custody of the records and for the use of the clerk of the pipe. Letter from George Irvine, schoolmaster, Longford, County Longford, to John Taylor, clerk, Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, seeking clarification over procedure for application for the post of master to the diocesan school of Tuam in County Galway. Also letter from John Smith, Drumsna, County Leitrim, to Taylor, confirming the date of his father’s appointment to the diocesan school of Elphin, County Roscommon, is 31 December 1794, and requesting to learn whether the salary of £80 per year is to be awarded in addition to £30 which is provided by the bishop [John Leslie] and clergy of diocese. Also letter from Chamberlen William Walker, secretary, Board of Education Office, 20 Kildare Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a list of diocesan schoolmasters ‘under the old arrangement surviving at the period when the new was formed’ [not present]. Letter from Major Thomas Powell, chief constable of police, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, stressing limitation in local police personnel and inadvisability of their deployment as guards on Wexford Gaol, which is rendered insecure due to structural deterioration. Returns letter from Major Benjamin Blake Woodward, inspector general of prisons, 41 Leeson Street, Dublin, to Gregory, advocating the use of the ‘military or Constabulary force’ to secure the jail of Wexford. Encloses letter from Anthony Cliffe, high sheriff, [Bellevue], Enniscorthy, County Wexford, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, warning of the ‘unprotected condition of the Gaol owing to the outer wall being down’ and seeking guidance over the use of the police. Also letter from Reverend Richard Waddy Elgee, local jail inspector and rector, Wexford, to Woodward, emphasising the inherent danger of an overcrowded jail; stressing the need for six sentries to prevent escape of prisoners who number ‘many desperate and enterprizing [sic] Characters’.
